Julia Edwards

writer • teacher

A graduate from Brown University (BA, Semiotics) and UC-San Diego (MFA, Playwriting), I am a writer and teacher, based in the Los Angeles area.

My background is in playwriting. An avid fan of site-specific performance, my play Untethered was produced at the Mountain View Mausoleum (in Altadena, CA) and Family Planning, which was performed in residential homes, won the LA Ovation Award for Best Small Production. I have also written several plays for young audiences which are published through YouthPLAYS, including Lockdown and A Loser Like You which appears in the high school anthology Bullying, Ink.

My first middle grade manuscript, Anno Catti: In the Year of Our Cat, won the LA-SCBWI Sue Alexander Grant in 2017 (runner-up) and 2018 (first place). I am currently seeking representation for my middle grade novel, I Speak for the Trees.

For the past two decades, I have taught creative writing to kids from nursery school to college-age. My classes for young writers previously offered through Pasadena StoryLab have morphed into an online resource at:  www.juliacedwards.com/storylab.

A member of SCBWI.
